Just noticed that I can not add email address with - (first-name.lastname@email.com) to username. It would be great, if this limitation could be removed.

This is looks like your own adjustments of Joomla. Just tested it with blank installed Joomla and it worked without problem. Additionally would you be kind provide me with your site URL I test it.

Just tested again: still getting "Your login name contains invalid characters or is too short."

When I remove - from loginname, it works perfectly. Using JUser 1.014 (upgraded from 1.012) and Joomla 1.012.

Have not modified the code, except the length of username (from 25 chars to 75 chars).

Sorry I was incorrect, do you use email instead of name? and username, really username will not allow you use -,_ and probably some other characters,it is Joomla core functions as JUser didn't change it. This function just applied in JUser without changing. It seems you need do custom work with code, sorry cannot exactly point where it is.
